Course Objective

Maximise your potential by contributing to Projects in an effective way. Improve the success rate of Projects completing on time and meeting defined quality deliverables. Candidates who are successful in the examination will attain the industry recognised Foundation Certificate in Project Management – a measure of their capability and performance.

Target student

This course is designed for anyone working in an IT Service Management environment who is required to contribute effectively to Projects, and to have an understanding of how using a best practice Project Management methodology can contribute significantly to projects which place a clear focus on delivering business requirements.

Delivery Method

The course is based on the Office of Government Commerce (OGC’s) PRINCE2™ Methodology. The course has a significant aspect of syndicate work in a case study environment; to give a sound understanding of project based work according to PRINCE2™. The course also prepares the candidate for the examination, which leads to the Foundation Certificate in Project Management, administered by the APM Group.

Documentation

Comprehensive course documentation is provided, including a copy of PinkRoccade’s Little PRINCE2™ guide to project management for small and medium sized projects.

Performance-Based Objectives

Lesson objectives help students become comfortable with the course, and also provide a means to evaluate learning. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

• Gained a basic knowledge and understanding of project management and project-based work.
• Identified the difference between a project and a process.
• Been introduced to the components, elements and processes of PRINCE2™ and the relationships that bind them together.

Course Content

Module 1: Introduction to Project Management

• Identify what project management is all about.
• The importance it plays in assisting organisations in meeting their business goals.
• Differences between project and process work.
• How/why projects are successful or not.

Module 2: Introduction to PRINCE2™ Methodology

• Introduction to PRINCE2™ – history, plus the unique selling points.
• Components, processes and techniques of PRINCE2™ methodology.
• Tuning to all sizes and complexities of projects.

Module 3: Project Start-up

• Identifies what needs to be considered when determining the validity and feasibility of the project in realising business benefits.
• Creating the project brief from the project mandate.
• Importance of documenting everything from input to the initiation stage.

Module 4: Roles & Responsibilities of the Project Board

• What needs to be done throughout the project lifecycle to ensure conformity to process and delivery of identified business goals and benefits.

Module 5: Project Initiation

• The importance of identifying what the project is attempting to achieve and why it is important to the business.
• Who and how the project will be managed and how and when it will be executed.

Module 6: Planning

• Identifies the crucial importance of planning.
• The necessity of planning at the appropriate level.
• The requirements of high level plus detailed planning is also addressed.

Module 7: Managing and Controlling Stage Boundaries

• Review the issues and exceptions that can arise during the various stages of a project.
• Identifies how progress and the output of each stage should be controlled and managed, plus identifying the option to proceed or not with the next stage, or even continue with the project itself.

Module 8: Managing Project Delivery

• Focuses on how to deliver the business benefits as a result of the project work.
• Brings together all the preceding activities into business focus.

Module 9: Project Closing

• Examines the activities involved with wrapping everything up at the end of the project and disbanding the project team.
• Addresses the need to review all activities so that lessons can be learnt from the ‘good’ as well as the ‘not-so good’ experiences.

Module 10: Managing Conflicts Between Project Work and Everyday Activities

• Resource availability is always an issue, so this session looks at what can happen and how it might be addressed. (this session is outside the scope of PRINCE2™, but is included to identify some of the issues.)

Examination Preparation

• Example examination questions with opportunities to discuss and review the answers will be presented throughout the course.

Foundation in Project Management Examination

• Duration: 60 minutes
• Examination Format: 75 questions, multiple choice answers
• To pass: a score of 65% or more
• Result will be known at the end of the course.
